DESCRIPTION
MCGILL 1 – FOUNDATION FOR THE PAIN FREE BACK
This course is geared for clinicians, trainers, coaches and performance specialists who wish to update their knowledge of the most recent developments in function of the lumbar spine. Specifically, how the spine works, how it becomes injured, and the many pathways to pain and dysfunction. Then, strategies to reduce cumulative stress that lead to pain are described and workshopped. Building capacity to train once pain has been addressed is an essential skill that will set you apart as a clinician. Approaches to enhance movement and stimulate adaptations leading to successful rehabilitation are explained and workshopped. In summary, evidence, together with clinical technique, assist the delegates to deliver methods to empower and heal their clients.

You will learn:

The foundations of how the spine works and becomes injured and/or painful
How to interpret what clients are presenting to you
Prevention of back disorders and risk reduction for clients and organizations
Proven approaches to rehabilitation
Foundations essential to enable eventual enhancement of performance

MCGILL 2 – ASSESSMENT: CONVERGING ON A PRECISE DIAGNOSIS
McGill Method 2 is geared for clinicians, advanced trainers, coaches and performance specialists who wish to obtain advanced skills to assess back-pained clients/patients. The primary objective is for you to be able to converge on a precise understanding of the pathway and mechanism of pain/dysfunction.

You will learn:

Recent developments in science and in skills to assess back pain, dysfunction, and pathology across the broad spectrum of clients
Interviewing skills in conducting and extracting insights that reveal pain mechanisms
A robust set of testing competencies of many specific pain provocation tests, together with a logic that directs convergence on the pain mechanism(s)
How to find and test an antidote strategy for immediate change in symptoms
How to create progressions and regression to enhance client progress
Skills that allow you to understand the client’s cognitive status and influence on movement patterns so that you are the most effective person to help them.
TESTIMONIALS

“The seminar itself should be a must for all of the professions. The assessment is concise, logical, and allows one to flow easily through the algorithms that one needs to go through in solving complex Back problems. It takes out the bias that we bring in with each of our professions and provides a comprehensive compendium that can be used on Monday morning. It leaves no stone unturned.” (Dr. Larry Bell)

“Spending time with Dr McGill as he laid out tools and then ‘played jazz’ as he zeroed in on a precise diagnosis was a terrific experience… refreshing, stimulating, affirming and humbling. Lectures were packed with good information with many clinical pearls along the way. I truly thank Professor McGill for bringing his wisdom to the world and for putting on classes. I hope many more clinicians get to experience his teaching and many more patients will experience the restoration of their movement life.” (Dr. Mike Caruso)

“Our staff were extremely impressed with the organization skills, precision and thoughtfulness of the host Sarah throughout the entire weekend. I have been to many seminars over the years and I can confidently say that your preparation and execution was amongst the very best.” (Ro Sharma)

MCGILL 3 – HIGH PERFORMANCE TRAINING: PROGRESSING BACKS FROM PAIN TO PERFORMANCE
McGill Method 3 is geared for clinicians, advanced trainers, coaches and performance specialists who wish to obtain advanced skills to enhance the performance of sport and occupational athletes alike. Mechanisms and training techniques used with world class athletes will be introduced and discussed. The development of movement/motor patterns, endurance, speed, and power within the principles that minimize back injury, or exacerbation of existing injury are work-shopped. Specific topics covered include: building resilience, training capacity, strength and speed techniques within pain-free progressions. Formalization of some of the performance “tricks” including how to get through “sticking points”, enhancing pulsing strength for more speed and optimization of elastic contributions, and developing “superstiffness” will be done in lecture and practical sessions.

The primary objective is for you enhance the resilience and performance of your clients given a broad spectrum of athletic demands.

You will learn:

Mechanisms and training techniques used with world class athletes
How to quantify the demands of specific occupational and sporting athletics, quantify the capabilities of the individual, and create targeted programs to ensure that athlete capabilities are able to meet the demands.
How to develop movement/motor patterns, endurance, speed, and power within the principles that minimize spine stress
Coaching cues to maximise effectiveness of injury resilience and performance that recognize differences in neurology, anatomy, learning style etc.

SUGGESTED READINGS
Books will be available for sale at this event with discount
If you wish to pre-order some back you can do so from our partner Spine Store

This presentation synthesizes many research articles. However, the information has been synthesized into three books:

1. Back Mechanic, written for the lay public, guides the reader through an assessment of their pain triggers. Then it coaches them what not to do to desensitize the pain and build movement capacity. Then it guides them on exercises to build a pain-free foundation for movement.

2. McGill, S.M. Ultimate back fitness and performance, Sixth Edition, Backfitpro Inc, 2017
Available at: www.backfitpro.com

Ultimate Back Fitness describes the science of back function as it pertains to training for higher performance function (either occupational or athletic), provides algorithms for examining the critical components of different activities to identify what needs training, and the full exercise spectrum and progression from corrective exercise to stabilization exercise, endurance training, true strength development and speed, power and agility enhancement. Techniques used by some of the top athletes in the world are quantified and described.

3. McGill, S.M. Low Back Disorders: Evidence based prevention and rehabilitation – Third Edition, Human Kinetics Publishers, Champaign USA, 2016
Low Back Disorders, written for clinicians and scientists, describes the science of back function, prevention of back troubles and rehabilitative approaches. It has a robust description of patient assessment involving provocative testing to create a precise diagnosis that guides each patient on the most effective path for them.

4. Gift of injury – In the highly competitive world of strength athletics, a back injury is seen by many as the ultimate career-ender. In truth, if handled properly, it is far from a death sentence. Follow the journey of international powerlifting champion Brian Carroll, who can attest to this first hand. This remarkable athlete went from 1100 lb squats and 800 lb deadlifts to unending pain and disability after a massive spinal compression injury. After a fortuitous meeting with leading back expert Professor Stuart McGill, he reset his training and his life to fight his way back to the top of the winner’s podium.

Glean expertise from McGill and Carroll, both masters in their field, and learn how to orchestrate your own triumphant comeback. Whether you are a former champion yourself who has fallen on hard times, or someone starting a new foray into the world of strength training who wants to avoid injury and maximize training, the wisdom found within these pages is sure to take your resilience and lifts to the next level.

Over 200 full color, rich illustrations demonstrate technique.
