EREPS Membership Roles

When applying to EREPS you can apply to be recognised against the following disciplines.

Fitness Assistant (EQF level 2)

The role of a Fitness Assistant is to promote health and fitness participation for new and existing members. Their work will involve providing a clean, safe and friendly environment that promotes regular member attendance and satisfaction. They should be a source of information and encouragement for all members and actively assist fitness instructors and other workers wherever possible.


Fitness Instructor & Group Fitness Instructor (EQF level 3)

The role of a Fitness or Group Fitness Instructor is to build fitness participation of new and existing members through fitness experiences that meet their needs. An Instructor delivers fitness instruction to individuals with the use of equipment (Fitness Instructor) or to a group through fitness classes (Group Fitness Instructor). Both types of Instructor have the same purpose of promoting and delivering safe and effective exercise but depending on the specific situation, some additional knowledge, skills and competences may be required.


Personal Trainer (EQF level 4)

A Personal Trainer’s role includes designing, implementing and evaluating exercise/ physical activity programmes for a range of individual clients by collecting and analysing client information to ensure the effectiveness of personal exercise programmes. A Personal Trainer should also actively encourage potential clients/members to participate in and adhere to regular exercise/physical activity programmes, employing appropriate motivational strategies to achieve this and to assist them with behavioural change as a result.

Pilates Teacher (EQF level 4)

A Pilates matwork teacher’s role includes planning, teaching and adapting exercises based on the work and principles of Joseph Pilates. Information will need to be collected and analysed for each client to ensure that programmes are safe, appropriate and effective. 

A Pilates teacher should be able to apply the principles through specific lesson planning and teaching which should be supportive and delivered in a non-competitive environment. 

They will need to have the skills to motivate and encourage clients to ensure their adherence to regular sessions.


Youth Fitness Instructor (EQF level 4)

A Youth Fitness Instructor for children and adolescents is responsible for the planning, instructing and evaluation of activities for children (approximate ages 6-11 years) and adolescents (approximates ages 12-17 years), including (but not limited to) creative play, games providing basic skills for various sports and general exercise, individual and group fitness activities to promote a healthy lifestyle. A Youth Fitness Instructor is responsible for encouraging children and adolescents and where possible, their family and friends, to adhere to activities that promote exercise and a healthy lifestyle, employing motivational strategies to achieve this.


Active Ageing Trainer (EQF level 4)

An Active Ageing Trainer delivers fitness instruction to individuals with the use of equipment in a gym (Fitness Instructor pre-requisite) or to a group through fitness classes (Group Fitness Instructor pre-requisite). The Active Ageing Trainer differs from a Level 3 Instructor in their understanding of the physiology of ageing and their ability to work safely with older adults through the adaptation of exercise programme design and delivery. Active Ageing Trainers create a fitness environment that is welcoming and not intimidating for older exercisers.


Exercise for Health Specialist (EQF level 5)

An Exercise for Health Specialist will need the ability to communicate sensitively with a wide range of individuals that have existing chronic health conditions or are at high risk of developing them due to their lifestyle. They can programme and supervise exercise for individuals (and groups if they hold this prior competency) with a range of chronic health conditions determined to be of low or moderate risk of an adverse event according to recognised stratification tools. An Exercise for Health Specialist is able to communicate effectively with medical and healthcare professionals about participant’s conditions using correct medical terminology, and with an understanding of the standard treatment options for an individual’s condition. They will need to take a holistic approach to the wellness of their clients that includes advising on lifestyle, healthy eating and stress management, in addition to exercise relevant to the condition with respect to professional boundaries.


Pre-Diabetes Exercise Specialist (EQF Level 5)

A (Pre)Diabetes Exercise Specialist has a role which includes designing, implementing, evaluating and supervising exercise/physical activity programmes for (pre) diabetes clients by collecting and analysing client information to ensure the effectiveness and safety of personal exercise programmes. As part of a team with other professionals, however, the PDES can contribute significantly and uniquely in helping the (pre) diabetes clients to improve their health and life through a monitored and specific exercise programme.


Weight Management Exercise Specialist (EQF level 5)

A Weight Management Exercise Specialist has a role which includes designing, implementing, evaluating and supervising exercise/physical activity programmes for overweight and obese individuals by collecting and analysing client information to ensure the effectiveness and safety of personal exercise programmes. As part of a team with other professionals, however, a WMS can contribute significantly and uniquely in helping the overweight and obese clients to improve their health and life through a monitored and specific exercise programme.


Pregnancy and Postnatal Exercise Specialist (EQF level 5)

The role of the Pregnancy and Postnatal Exercise Specialist is to build exercise participation for beginners and already active women at all stages of pregnancy and during the postpartum period. This could be done through group or individual exercise programmes that meet their needs and objectives. In addition, the Pregnancy and Postnatal Exercise Specialist will be expected to assess overall physical fitness, to develop proper exercise programmes, to review participants’ progress and to be able to report on adherence and outcomes to relevant stakeholders.


Graduate Exercise Professional (EQF level 6)

A Graduate Exercise Professional has a role, which includes, designing, implementing, conducting/instructing, evaluating and supervising exercise/physical activity programmes for the general population and for specialist populations (special phases of life e.g. pre-adolescents and adolescents, healthy pregnant and postpartum women and older adults), by collecting and analysing client information to ensure the effectiveness and safety of personal and group exercise programmes. The Graduate Exercise Professional also supervises other fitness professionals and participates in the implementation of exercise/physical activity promotion activities and programmes, as well as in the managing activities of the club, in order to assure and provide the quality of the service to members or customers.

Once your application is received our International Registrar will review this in full to decide on comparability against the standards and confirm the most appropriate role.
