The course concludes with a case-based examination that evaluates each student's understanding and practical competence in relation to the learning outcomes for nutritional counselling.

Students receive a client case describing an individual's background, lifestyle, eating habits, and personal goals. The assessment is structured around five core tasks that mirror the competencies a practising nutritional counsellor must demonstrate:

• Reading and interpreting the case – identifying 3–4 key focus points relevant to the client (e.g. whether the client is results-oriented and wants rapid weight loss, or is a single parent who needs quick and simple meals).

• Calculating BMI, REE and DEE and assessing PAL – performing the relevant energy calculations correctly and demonstrating sound judgement (e.g. adjusting to a fictive weight at BMI 25 when BMI exceeds 30, and applying a conservative PAL, rarely above 1.5 for weight-loss goals).

• Applying the official dietary guidelines – evaluating how far the client's current diet is from the official guidelines and proposing realistic adjustments, including knowledge of sources of key vitamins and minerals.

• Producing a realistic dietary plan with focus on adherence– submitting a written response to the case together with a practical diet plan the client could begin following. The plan must be internally consistent with the student's own calculations (e.g. if 1,700 kcal/day is calculated, the plan must contain approximately 1,700 kcal).

• Presenting the case – delivering a clear, concise oral presentation (approximately 45 minutes) covering all five tasks, during which the examiners ask follow-up questions.
