Julian Berriman the Director of the EuropeActive Professional Standards Committee was honoured to present at ELAV’s Sports Science Day conference on 15 May. The ELAV online live event focussed on the application of science to the training of fitness professionals and offered a series of insightful sessions with 12 universities represented alongside ELAV’s Research and Development division.

ELAV is an accredited provider of EuropeActive in Italy an invited the Director PSC to present on the future of fitness professionals based on EuropeActive’s research, with particular reference to the impact of Covid-19.

The Director PSC opened the event by introducing the 300+ attendees to EuropeActive Horizon 2025 Sectoral Manifesto and it’s four pillars of health, digital, community and standards. He then referenced EuropeActive foresight research which underlined these pillars in identifying the main drivers for change and development in the sector as digitalisation/technologies and health/demographics. These sectoral drivers would have significant impacts on fitness professionals across Europe. They reflected the need for professionals to take a broader whole-person, lifestyle coach approach when working with clients. Such an approach should support not only the physical but also the social and mental health of clients and, harness the power of digital technologies in supporting clients on their journey toward a healthier lifestyle.

Recent EuropeActive surveys had evidenced that many of these professionals are already looking to upskill in working with specialist/clinical populations, communication skills, behavioural management and, delivering their services online. These intentions were indicative of a future fitness professional armed with the knowledge and skills to offer their clients and the wider health sector physical activity-based preventative health solutions in both live and online formats.

The Director closed the session by thanking ELAV for their invitation and stating that EuropeActive would continue to work with them and other partners in Italy to prepare fitness professionals for a brighter and healthier future.

Enrico Guerra, the ELAV Research and Development Director thanked the Director PSC for his partcipation, ‘I would like on behalf of myself and of all ELAV, to thank you and congratulate you for your active and high-level participation in the Congress. The excellence you have fielded leaves no doubt about the value of what we do and what we will be able to do for the future.’
