On November 26, 2024, the CNOSF headquarters in Paris hosted the Work, Move, and Perform (WMP) conference, an important event focused on the intersection of workplace well-being and physical activity. Organized by the French Federation for Company Sport (FFSE), the conference brought together researchers, business leaders, and experts to discuss how physical activity can improve both the health and productivity of employees.
The conference featured key speakers Luciano Di Fonzo (EACEA) and Didier Besseyre (FFSE Pres., EFCS Pres., WFCS Pres.), who emphasized the importance of incorporating sports and physical activity into the corporate culture. Their talks underscored the growing need for companies to prioritize employee well-being as part of a broader strategy to boost overall productivity. The message was clear: sport in the workplace is not just a wellness initiative but a smart economic investment.
The University of Murcia also presented pivotal research findings, shedding light on both the promise and challenges of workplace physical activity (PA). Their research revealed mixed results regarding the link between PA interventions and productivity, highlighting the need for long-term studies.
Research Highlights
- Quantitative Study: Productivity outcomes linked to PA interventions varied, but studies conducted in Europe showed more consistent positive effects, particularly in interventions lasting 12 months or more.
- Qualitative Study: the effects of PA on productivity are often assumed, studies suggest that PA in the workplace does have a variety of positive impacts, including better mental and physical well-being, though the connection to productivity still requires more robust evidence.
Insights from the Conference
Reflecting on the conference and its discussions, I strongly believe that integrating sport into the workplace is a win-win strategy for both employees and companies. Employees benefit economically by reducing healthcare costs, while also experiencing the mental and physical benefits of exercise—such as lower stress levels, improved concentration, and increased overall well-being. These benefits lead to better focus, lower burnout rates, and improved morale.
For companies, the benefits are equally clear: reduced absenteeism, fewer workplace accidents, and higher levels of engagement and productivity. Encouraging employees to stay active not only enhances their health but also creates a more productive, energized, and efficient workforce. Moreover, companies can serve as a powerful vehicle for promoting physical activity on a larger scale. As society becomes increasingly sedentary, the workplace offers a unique opportunity to drive positive changes in physical activity levels and help employees lead healthier lives.
Several companies, including Airbus and BPCE Sports, were also highlighted during the conference as successful case studies. Their investment in employee fitness programs has shown tangible benefits, further reinforcing the value of incorporating PA into the workplace.
